Nicolas Jaar - Don't Break My Love EP

2011's favourite, Nicolas Jaar, is back with a delightful slice of crackling, techno tinged downtempo pie. None of the aforementioned words, aside from pie, really work when you actually listen to the EP, but how else to describe it? You could reasonably throw in around ten genres, wrap it in pastry, bake it for 6 minutes and still not find something as different, yet familiar, as this. His press blurb calls it "organic electronic music". A tad on the pretentious side, but this is sublime electronic music, with enough influences running through it you'd literally have to be a robot to garner enjoyment from it.  

 

The opening track begins with the obligatory crackles and hand claps, seemingly the vogue of downtempo, electronic music. But it progresses, slowly but surely, to catch you unawares. Like bananas running downstairs without their underwear. Only, as the dub drums and snares and female hook kick in, for you spend a hot minute bopping about. Then it stops, you sit down, maybe put some butter on your King Edwards, and await track 2, below...
