YES! *Pump Fist* First Word Records are doing their freebie thing again, which is ALWAYS a cause for celebration. Volume 6 of the fantastic Two Syllables compilation series is now out and downloadable here. I remember when you had to pay for these compilations and it was a bargain then. Now it's free, BOOM!
First Word originated as a means to showcase the broken beat and hip-hop talents of Leeds, and in the last 6 years has grown to encompass dub, hip-hop, reggae, soul, afrobeat, funk, forward/future/nu/uk/really-nice-sounding garage/dubstep/electronica/whatthefuckdowecallit-bass music from across the UK, France and possibly further afield. I hope that was vaguely concise enough?
They represent a lot of what we love about music - they're not constrained by any scene, crowd or opinon beyond the diabolically good tastes of CEOs Gilla and Andy H. In turn, we're given a label that delves into the unexpected, yet never fails to please. The album features a string of familiar favourites and remixed classics, courtesy of Homecut, East Park Reggae Collective, Lotek, Ye Migty, Souleance, kidkanevil, Herma Puma and more.
My personal highlights of this compliation include:
Souleance - Passarinho. Laid back, chopped up, soulful re-imagining of dancefloor boombap bass sung in a foreign tongue. Make sense? No? Well.. just listen.
Debain Blak - Tantalise. Genuinely exciting new producer/DJ/multi-instrumentalist from the UK. Tantalsie is lifted from his debut EP, A Hint of Menace, a deft mixture of live electronica, garage and bass. (It's free too!)
Lotek & The Ubiquitous Dub Legitimzers - The Rudest Dub. Superb contemporary dub music from Lotek one of the UKs finest dub/reggae/hiphop producers of the last decade.
kidkanevil - 10seconds reflip - One minute thirty two seconds of getting schooled on how to reflip soul on an mpc, from the UKs most interesting producer.
